Why Small Equipment Orders Fail—A Sandvik Quality Inspector's Perspective
The Problem Nobody Wants to Admit
I'm a quality/compliance manager at Sandvik. I review about 200+ product orders a year before they ship—some of them very large. But I notice more failures in small orders. Before I worked in manufacturing, I was on the contractor side: I bought a concrete mixer, rented telehandlers, and had a bucket bag fail on a job. At least, that's been my experience with contractor-size purchases; bigger mining projects bring their own engineers and longer documents. When a purchase is small, the customer usually fills in fewer details, and that is where the trouble starts.
The surface problem sounds like "I bought the cheaper machine and it let me down." The deeper problem is that no one defined the job. A vague product description is not a spec, and a bigger budget does not fix that.
Why Small Orders Are Vague
Honestly, I'm not sure why a $2,000 purchase gets fewer written requirements than a $200,000 one. My best guess is that people are afraid to sound like they don't know, so they keep questions short. But "heavy duty," "good brand," and "you know what I mean" are not spec language.
A concrete mixer is not one thing. It has a drum volume, a mixing action, a discharge height, a power source, and abrasion points. A telehandler has a load chart with numbers that change as the boom extends. A bucket bag can have a working load limit of 2,000 kg or 6,000 kg; the difference is in the stitching, loops, and reinforcement, not in the photo. Sandvik cone crushers are the same: each model is designed around feed type, feed size, throughput, and closed side setting. A crusher is not a single answer for "rock processing."
In the same way, a Sandvik Coromant scraper order might be one line on an invoice, but a wrong coating or geometry can cause a much larger failure later. The price of the line doesn't tell you the risk of the application.
The Missing Word: Duty Cycle
Duty cycle means how long and how hard the equipment runs. A concrete mixer doing a couple loads a week has a different duty from one running every day. A telehandler moving a few pallets per day is not the same as one placing trusses all day. A crusher running 16 hours a day in hard granite will wear differently from one running four hours on recycled concrete. If you don't put duty cycle on the order, the supplier will guess. That guess is usually optimistic.
Small Orders Are Not Lower Standard Orders
When I was starting out, the suppliers who treated my $200 orders seriously are the ones I later gave $20,000 orders to. Small doesn't mean unimportant—it means potential. But that only works if both sides keep the quality bar high. If a supplier treats a one-line order for a Sandvik Coromant scraper as irrelevant, that's useful information before you buy, not after. I'm not suggesting you demand custom engineering for every small purchase. I am saying a small purchase still deserves a real application check.
What a Vague Spec Really Costs
The failure usually doesn't show up at delivery. It shows up later, and it rarely shows up alone.
- A concrete mixer that can't hold a consistent mix can ruin a slab and a schedule.
- A telehandler lifting close to its maximum rated load with the boom extended can become unstable—that's a safety issue, not just a performance issue.
- A bucket bag that is underrated for the excavator is a risk for anyone standing under the load.
- A cone crusher set up for the wrong material can wear out liners faster and raise cost per ton.
Then add service time, missed deadlines, and warranty headaches. A wrong spec can stay invisible until the machine is no longer under warranty.
Looking back, I should have applied the same standard when I bought my first concrete mixer. At the time, I looked at drum size and price. I didn't ask about blade condition or cycle time. If I could redo that decision, I'd write a one-page spec for my own job before visiting any supplier. But given what I knew then, it felt more productive to compare prices.
The Fix: Write One Page Before You Buy
You don't need an engineering degree. You need a few bullets that describe the job, not just the product.
- Material: What are you crushing, mixing, lifting, or moving? Include weight, size, moisture, and abrasiveness.
- Duty: How many hours per day? How many cycles? What conditions—dust, rain, heat, high altitude?
- Numbers: Capacity, throughput, working load limit, reach, height, and clearances count. Replace "heavy duty" with a load chart or spec sheet.
- Paperwork: Ask for the manual, declaration of conformity, inspection certificate, and service documents. If a supplier hesitates, that tells you something.
Then send that one page to two or three suppliers. If they ask questions, they're paying attention. If they say "don't worry about it," that's when you worry.
What Is a Telehandler? Ask the Right Follow-Up
A telehandler is a wheeled telescopic handler with a boom that can lift forks, buckets, or other attachments. Its maximum capacity changes with boom extension and angle, so the useful question is not just "what is a telehandler?" but "how much does the load chart say I can lift at the reach and height I need?" That follow-up is the same discipline every project deserves.
No matter how small the order is, write the spec first. A one-line bucket bag order, a scraper order, or a concrete mixer quote should all be held to the same standard: the machine must match your material, your cycle, your environment, and your future service plan. Small doesn't mean unimportant. It means the next order depends on how well this one goes.
So the next time you search for Sandvik cone crushers, a concrete mixer, or a bucket bag, don't stop at the product page. Define the job first. The size of your order won't limit the quality of your outcome—a vague spec will.
