The call came in at 9:17 on a Tuesday night. Not 9:15. Not 9:30. I remember because I had just sat down with a bowl of chili, and the phone lit up with Dale's name. I knew the chili wasn't going to get eaten warm.
“Drill's down,” he said. “Rotation stalls after about ten revolutions. Sounds like the motor is loading up. I'm going to need a rotation motor.”
Dale runs the blasting side of a granite quarry outside Spokane. The down machine was a Sandvik rock drill on their primary blast-hole rig—the one rig that handles the whole pattern.
