Why a Cheaper Sandvik Replacement Radiator Cost Us $4,800
In October 2023, I signed a purchase order for a Sandvik replacement radiator. That radiator was supposed to fix a cooling problem on our Sandvik LH518B battery electric LHD. It did fix the leak. It also caused a $4,800 headache that lasted almost a month.
The surface problem: The replacement radiator looked and fit just fine
The original radiator had a small crack in the end tank, so the ordering process seemed straightforward. I called the dealer for a price. I also called an aftermarket parts supplier who said they had a 'direct replacement' ready to go. It was cheaper and available sooner. I ordered it.
From the outside, the replacement looked identical. Same mounting holes. Same inlet and outlet locations. Same fan shroud clearance. My installation crew put it in without any shims or custom brackets. We pressure tested it, filled the system, and everything held.
The problem showed up when the machine started working. Under load, the Sandvik LH518B would run fine for about an hour, then the overheat warnings started climbing. The first time it derated, I thought the issue was the thermostat or the electric fan controller. I was wrong.
Here's the thing: the radiator didn't fail mechanically. It failed thermally. It fit perfectly but could not reject the heat the machine was producing. The battery and the power electronics have a narrow operating temperature range, so the vehicle cuts power before it lets components get too hot. What I mean is that the core—not the end tank—does the real work. When I finally clamped the original and replacement radiators side by side, the replacement's core was about 25 mm thinner and had a different fin spacing. It probably also had a different number of tubes. I didn't check any of that before installing it, because from the outside, the part 'looked right'.
The mounting holes matched. The part number cross-reference matched. But a catalog part number usually describes the shape, not the thermal performance. A radiator can be called a 'direct replacement' because it bolts onto the same machine, yet still lack the same heat rejection capacity. That distinction is what created the $4,800 mistake.
From the outside, an aftermarket radiator looks exactly like the original. The difference becomes visible only when you compare the core and understand the machine's duty cycle. The original radiator was specified for the vehicle's thermal load. The replacement, I believe, was selected because it was the closest core in stock. In an empty shop, both look fine. In a hot underground environment, they are not the same part.
Look, I'm not saying aftermarket radiators are always bad. I am saying that buying one 'by part number' is a gamble. In my experience, the house usually wins.
The real cost: The cheapest part became the most expensive
We spent close to two weeks chasing the wrong problem. We replaced the thermostat because it was cheap. We replaced temperature sensors. We flushed the coolant and changed the pressure cap. Nothing fixed the overheating. Eventually a field engineer asked 'Did you order this by part number or by cooling spec?' That question should have come from me before I signed the PO.
In total, the avoidable cost was around $4,800. That includes the diagnosis labor, the parts that did not need replacing, the freight, and the production time lost while we tested things. It does not include the second radiator we ordered afterward, which worked without drama. The correct radiator ended up being the cheapest part of the entire mistake.
The strange part is that this was not my first cooling-system miss. A Mustang truck in our fleet had a similar issue the year before, and a trash compactor once had a replacement core that looked right but overheated whenever it was worked hard. I treated those as separate one-off stories. They were not. They were all the same lesson, and I did not really believe that lesson until I got this bill.

When an LHD is down, every hour feels expensive. But time pressure is not a reason to skip the engineering side of the decision. Time pressure is a reason to pay for certainty. In March 2024, we paid $580 for overnight shipping on the correct radiator. I have mixed feelings about rush fees—on one hand, they feel like a tax; on the other, our operations manager would have killed me if the loader stayed down another day. A correct part tomorrow was cheaper than a maybe-correct part today.
If you need a Sandvik replacement radiator and someone tells you it will fit, ask what specs they have to prove it:
- Ask for the heat rejection rating in kilowatts or BTU per hour. If the supplier cannot give you a number, they do not have engineering data.
- Compare core dimensions too: depth, row count, fin spacing, tube count, and tank material. The mounting holes are only one part of the story.
- If the machine is battery-electric, ask specifically about thermal management compatibility. A Sandvik LH518B battery electric LHD, for example, has stricter cooling requirements than a conventional diesel loader.
- If the price looks too good, ask what they expect you to accept as a trade-off. There is usually one.
Everyone warned me to compare cooling specs before ordering. I only believed it after ignoring that advice and paying the price. You don't have to learn the same way. Fit and cool are not the same thing. A Sandvik replacement radiator should do both.
