I Don't Buy the Cheapest Sandvik Jaw Crusher Anymore. Here's Why.
Cheapest is not the same as cheapest to own. That is not a slogan; it is the conclusion I reached after years of processing invoices, restocking maintenance rooms, and placing orders that range from a Sandvik jaw crusher all the way down to a popcorn bucket.
I am an office administrator for a 130-person demolition and recycling contractor. In a normal year I handle 60 to 80 purchase orders across eight or nine vendor categories. My answer is that a tight budget is not a reason to buy a more fragile version of the same thing. It is a reason to buy fewer good units, rent for the peak period, or postpone the purchase until the cost model supports it. Saving $200 on an invoice means nothing if the product fails at the wrong moment. The problem is that the failure happens later, in a different month's budget, and nobody ties it back to the purchase order. I started tying them back. That is when I stopped buying on price alone.
I am not saying every expensive product is better. Some are overpriced. Some cheap products are genuinely good. But I am saying that price should not be the first number you compare. Compare support. Compare durability. Compare the cost of failure. Then decide.
So, would I buy the cheapest Sandvik jaw crusher? No. And I would not buy the cheapest paint scraper, the cheapest generator, or the cheapest popcorn bucket either. I would buy the option that makes the business money over the whole job. The invoice is not the cost. The cost is not the value.
